"Unforeseen ink chemistry: Solutions for perovskite solar cells"

While performance of thin film solar cells based on hybrid organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites have crossed thresholds for efforts to transfer from lab-scale to commercialization, issues persist with regard to long-term ink and device stability. In this seminar, we will discuss progress on uncovering unforeseen and underappreciated reactions that emerge from common solvents, additives, or reaction byproducts, such as DMSO and amines. Ensuing proton transfer reactions can occur either in solution or via remnant solvent in processed films and devices, as these strongly coordinating and low vapor pressure solvents are difficult to fully remove. We will show that efforts to reveal root-causes of instabilities, and the tractable remedies this understanding allows, to enable high efficiency (>20%) and long lifetime (TS,80 approaching 5000 h).
